Preamble To The Constitution Of Parents Without Partners, Inc. As conscientious single parents, it is our primary endeavor to bring our children to healthy maturity, with the full sense of being loved and accepted as a people and with the same prospects for adulthood as children who mature with their two parents together. Adults and children in single parent families face unique and challenging circumstances. For children to mature and flourish in the absence of either parent, an added measure of love, understanding, and sound guidance is required. To provide these needs is a responsibility inherent in parenthood regardless of marital status. The challenge of providing for both our children and us a nurturing family life is often complicated by established patterns of community life. Consequently, a need for community resources to assist single parents in communicating and meeting their special circumstances exists. Therefore, in the conviction that we can achieve this end through working together, through the exchange of ideas, and through the mutual understanding, help and companionship that we find with one another, we have established "Parents Without Partners, Inc." to further our common welfare and the welfare of our children. The problems are many in bringing up our children alone, contending with the adjustments and emotional conflicts arising out of widowhood and separation. PWP Inc. is the only national and international organization that exists to study these problems. Through programs of discussion, professional speakers, study groups, publications and social activities for families and adults, real help is provided to single parents in reshaping their lives. Parents Without Partners, Inc. is a non-profit, nonsectarian, educational organization devoted to the welfare and interests of single parents and their children. A meeting of 25 single parents in New York City in 1957 marked the beginning of PWP, which now has chapters in every state, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England and Germany. PWP is first an educational organization concerned with providing support, fellowship, and opportunities for personal growth and strengthened family relationships. Because we are whole people in need of adult and social relationships, PWP offers a variety of adult social activities. Chapters must maintain a balanced program of educational, family and social activities. The Greater Wilmington Chapter, #121, serving a growing membership in the New Castle County area, was established in 1964 with 15 members and now has over 550 members. Member volunteers conduct the programs and activities. You are eligible to join PWP if you are the parent ofa living child and if you are single due to death, divorce, separation or never married status. Custody of your child or children is not a factor for membership eligibility. Prospective members must attend an orientation before attending any chapter functions.
